Product Description

As light and frothy as the Vivienne Westwood wedding gown that's an unofficial fifth star, the film version of Sex and the City is both captivatingly stylish and sweetly sentimental. Viewers who loved hanging with Carrie Bradshaw and her three pals during the series' TV run will feel as though no time has passed. Except that it has: Carrie and Big are poised to make a Big Commitment; Miranda and Steve are facing the breakup of their wonderful family; Charlotte and Harry have added to their brood; and Samantha (are we sitting down?) has been devoted to hunky Smith for five full years. Still, in all that time, the women's style, conviviality, and appetite for bons mots have only grown. When practical attorney Miranda learns that Carrie is considering moving in with Big (in possibly the coolest apartment in Manhattan), she can't help but frown in that but-you-might-lose-everything way. Carrie's retort: "For once, can't you feel what I want you to feel--jealous?!"

The cast is spot-on, as always. Sarah Jessica Parker is effortless as the angst-ridden yet practical, stylish yet vulnerable Carrie. Kim Cattrall is deliciously decadent as Samantha, but she's wiser now and knows herself and her needs for a real relationship. Kristin Davis, as Charlotte, has quietly become the most gorgeous among the beauties, her sleek presence both winsome and sophisticated. And Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) shows nuance as a woman torn between betrayal and grudging hope. Supporting roles include Candice Bergen as the Vogue editor who anoints Carrie "The Last Single Girl in New York," and Jennifer Hudson, as a starry-eyed, ambitious romantic who represents the new generation of SATC women. Through it all, New York is a benevolent cocoon that envelopes and nurtures the women and their friendships and careers. No matter that none of them appears to have any semblance of "real" family; as long as they have each other, and Manhattan, all will be right with their world. --A.T. Hurley

A blokes review

During the original years, the girl I was living with made me watch these as compensation for football. However I became hooked due to the quality and humour. With so much hype surrounding this movie, it could have all gone wrong..... I think although the plot for me was very obvious (you could see most of the events coming a mile away), there was less humour than before and a much more serious tone, it still worked really well. It still had the TV feel about it, could almost have been a 2 part special rather than a full blown feature film. That sounds like a criticism, but it is not as I think that is what works best. For me this has to be the very last though, the girls are just that bit too old now to make it work and it's time to say goodbye to the handbags and shoes for good.

City Fans Should Be Impressed...But A Poor Ending Ruins The Party.

Undoubtedly, fans of Sex and the City will have flocked to see this one and those who didn't (and did) will flock to buy it on DVD when it's released over the coming weeks, and in truth, they can't go far wrong.

If you like the show, then you will like, if not love, this film, albeit it is somewhat light on one of the major features of SATC as a TV show: character development.

If you watched the show, then you'll know the majority of the characters, but whereas they had a pretty significant part in SATC's TV episodes, they barely feature in the movie, Steve being the only exception.

However, bizarrely, where Sex And The City The Movie is at it's best, is in the area where the TV show always seemed to lack: emotional impact.

When Carrie is let down by Big, she is genuinely an emotional wreck and she's bare faced for all to see. It's not pretty and it is in part, heartbreaking.

As previously mentioned, SATC fans will enjoy this, as will I think a few outsiders, so the crew should be given a thumbs up on that one.

It's breezy, it's pretty easy to watch and for the most part sticks together quite nicely and all adds up to be one of the best rom-coms of the last few years. But it is let down in a big way by its ending.

Just when this film appeared to be actually gaining some credibility and was actually distancing itself from the pack, which is what the original show intends to do and succeeds, Carrie accepts Big's proposal after getting back together a few minutes prior after a year of heartache. Many will argue that this is because they were originally getting married for the wrong reasons, and they realised this, but despite this, if after coming back together after 20 minutes of laying on the floor of a closet together he proposes yet again and she says yes, this is unrealistic and messes up this film, purely because this wouldn't happen in pretty much any woman's mind...she would hopefully and rightfully say no, whether in the meantime or completely, especially after a year long rollercoaster like that.

So it returned to Hollywood, which disappointed me more than anything, but for most people, this movie will work just fine. It's funny, at times touching and does rightfully have a good following, but is severely flawed by an atrociously Hollywood ending, after such an effort to be...well, Sex and the City.

2.5 / 5.

just not even worth sitting through

If you enjoyed the series...this is a cold cash in on the series. Full of dissonance. No chemistry. Forced laughs from the cast..forget it...watch this and you will be forcing the laughs too...cos there aint none!
