Reviews Another great entertaining adventure If you want to be entertained, listen to this CD. It is very well narrated and listening to it you are brought back to the 30s. You can feel the Scottish air chillier and chillier as the adventure progresses. Yes some characters are unbelievable and there is always an improbable last minute twist that will save Paul and his wife Steve (I still wonder why Steve?), but it is sheer pleasure and entertainment. 2009-01-08 Not recommended unless you're already a fan I'm not old enough to have come across Paul Temple on the radio the first time round and this was my first experience of listening to any of his adventures. I'm afraid despite my best efforts - I listened to the CDs twice - the story failed to hold my attention. While the reader, Anthony Head, tried a range of accents for the characters I didn't find his portrayals particularly distinctive or gripping save for a few. Most of all, and accounting for the two stars, is the fact that this is all very dated and not in a particularly charming way. The language in clumsy and in some cases laughable. I do not want to hear phrases like 'by Timothy' as an expression of surprise (did anyone ever actually say this?) or the way various characters 'interceded', 'interjected' or best of all 'ejaculated' their comments in a conversation. The plot is weak and not believable. This may be a bad Paul Temple story but I won't be listening to more in the series. If you're a fan I guess you'll like the CDs, if not I doubt you'll be won over. There are many other 1930s novels and adaptations I'd turn to before Paul Temple and Steve (his bizarrely named wife). As Paul Temple might say 'By Timothy this is a red herring.' 2009-01-07 International Espionage and Intrigue This is my first Paul Temple novel, and definitely not my last. Francis Durbridge's creation, Paul Temple, unwittingly gets involved in uncovering a sinister plot, involving several deaths and shady characters. Lots of intrigue, suspicious events, odd coincidences, and of course the recurring question, who is Z4? A classic detective story that leaves you guessing who did it. BBC productions are always guaranteed to be of great quality and Anthony Head's reading of this abridged story definitely fits into this mould. Excellent throughout. 2009-01-07 By Timothy! As a youngster I remember listening avidly to Paul Temple on the radio. I loved the strangeness of a wife called Steve and the fact that he never seemed to do any work except drive around in a sports car solving crimes and talking in a post voice. Well, has Paul Temple stood up to the test of time? In a word, no.... I have to agree that Anthony Head reads it magnificently (but did wonder how he managed to get through it without bursting out laughing). News of Paul Temple is very much a period piece. The plot has more holes than a colander and most of the characters are unbelievable. However, I can't say I didn't enjoy this blast from the past. It was fun while it lasted but didn't whet my appetite for more. 2009-01-07 Very Enjoyable I never used to enjoy audio books. I always found that the portrayal by the actor(s) is never the way I picture them, and this plays on my mind throughout the story so I am unable to enjoy it. Lets just say that as time has gone by, my attitude is changing. And as my first audio book, this didn't disappoint me in the slightest. I found it gripping and highly enjoyable. Anthony Head does an admirable job telling the story, although I couldn't help but chuckle every time he performed a female character. The recording itself is extremely well done, and sounds fantastic. Just what you should expect from a BBC production. I think I will have to get the others now.
