  Collins Robert French Dictionary
Collins Robert French Dictionary

This is THE French dictionary to have. Don't bother with anything smaller. Extremely well organised, it will always have the answer for those tricky little usages where a lesser dictionary could have you making a fool of yourself.

I see there's an new, 30th anniversary, edition out. I'm sure it'll be even better - but I'll be sticking with this one for a few years yet!

101 French Idioms (101... Language Series)
101 French Idioms (101... Language Series)
Jean-Marie Cassagne

I'm not a French speaker or learner myself, but bought this as a gift for a friend who is tackling the language. I'm sure they'll enjoy it as it's quite fun compared to the dry language texts I had to wade through at school. It's interesting to see that some French idioms are quite similar to ours but have an unusual slant. For example, where we have 'Pushing up the daisies', they have 'Eating the...

I liked to take this class. Michel Thomas has a wonderful style. I must say that he is as good teaching you to speak French as SmartFrench is good at helping you to understand French - They are one dynamic duo!

Pardon My French: Unleash Your Inner Gaul
Pardon My French: Unleash Your Inner Gaul
Charles Timoney

This book is both entertaining and instructive.Written in an easy, informal style, it certainly has added many more every-day French words to my vocabulary. I can't wait to try out some of the terms & expressions on my next trip to France! The small size also makes it very handy to slip into the door pocket, or a large bag. Worth buying.
Collins Easy Learning French Dictionary (Easy Learning Dictionary)
Collins Easy Learning French Dictionary (Easy Learning Dictionary)

A very well laid out and easy to use dictionary. Clear and easy to read, you dont have to squint like you do with the Gem ones, still a very portable size though.
What's great about this is the section between the english-french and french-english sections is divided by a section of useful info. There is a colour map of France with all the departments listed along with significant towns. There...
Harraps French Grammar (Harrap's French Study Aids)
Harraps French Grammar (Harrap's French Study Aids)
Harrap

I bought this because it's an Open University set book, but I needn't have bothered. Although it is excellent, it's no better than the grammar book I already owned.

Moreover, my tutor has only referred me to a specific section once in the first five months of this eight-month course. Even then, the relevant information was easy to find in my other grammar book.

The one advantage I can see for...

GCSE French: Revision Guide Pt. 1 & 2
GCSE French: Revision Guide Pt. 1 & 2
Richard Parsons

This book has really helped me in my study of french and makes revision much easier. Grammar points are explained simply, and this is what lets you make up your own sentences and get the top marks. the revision questions at the end of each section reinforce what you have learned and let you know what you need to go back over. all this at a reasonable price, definately worth the money.

  15-minute French ( 2 CDs + BOOK ): Learn French in Just 15 Minutes a Day
15-minute French ( 2 CDs + BOOK ): Learn French in Just 15 Minutes a Day

I needed something to refresh my GCSE french and this has done nicely.
You get 2cds and a substantial book, which would be enough on its own but the cds gives you a great insight into the proper french pronunciation.

The book contains 12 weeks worth of lessons each focusing on the usual topics, restaurants, travel etc.
The sections are divided up into useful phrases, key words...
