One of the many refreshing things about Barack Obama is his self-deprecating sense of humour. Responding to the unrealistic expectations for his presidency, Obama said 'I've been sent by my father from the planet Krypton to save the Earth.' Unfortunately, the irony of this self-comparison to Superman was probably lost on many of his dedicated followers, who clearly believe that – once in office –...
If you liked Julie Walters in any of her work, Mrs O on stage or screen, Billy Elliot, Mrs Weasley in the well known Harry Potter films, Rita (the first and best), Petula Gordino or any number of fantastic characters then this is the book for you.
This is the story behind the characters. I knew very little about said author, the bare minimum of being with Grant (though how they got together...
It's become a cliché in Britain to call somebody in the entertainment field a national institution -- but that's exactly what Dawn French is. As both comedienne and actress (the latter in both comedy and straight parts), she has become one of the best loved entertainers in the country. Her range is not wide (unlike her dimensions -- and that's the sort of joke she’d crack), but she is utterly winning...
I love James Herriott-he has the gift to not only be very funny, but very touching. Reading his books can sometimes make you feel nostalgic towards an era you never knew. His love for life, even when things are going slightly pear shaped, transpires in all his stories and is a delight to behold. You end up feeling like you knew all the people in the stories-Siegfried, Triston...He really lets you into...
Great for car journeys, well produced, and lots of interesting stuff. Recommended for children 8 plus. My 10, 14 and 18 year old all enjoy these Naxos books, and so do their parents.
Well done naxos.
One of those books that I was reluctant to finish as the last page drew nearer.
Prior to reading this book I only knew Peter Ustinov as the delightful character Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie films. But I learned that he had a very long career in the theatre and that his talents seemed to include almost all areas in it.
Anyone who truly enjoys listening to Alistair Cookes talks would love this audio book. His background, and career is charted and combined beautifully with a great selection of actual reports.
John Grogan had no idea what he was in for when he and his wife Jenny adopted a ball of energy named Marley. He was destructive, impossible to train and delightful. Loving, gently protective and always forgivable, Marley was an integral member of the Grogan household for almost 14 years.
Anyone who has loved a companion animal will find this book to be laugh-out-loud funny and, ultimately,...
Book buyers will never tire of reading about Winston Churchill, for "the greatest adventurer of modern political history" (RA Butler's verdict) led a life of action-packed drama and global significance. Roy Jenkins' Churchill is the latest biography of this great Briton, following closely in the tailwind of Geoffrey Best's Churchill: A Study in Greatness. Where Best restores altitude...
